What is Spanish Infusion?

Spanish Infusion is an education program that blends an interactive curriculum with a progressive language experience. The Infusion model introduces the target language gradually allowing for important social/emotional support in the early grades as students navigate new routines, expectations, and an experiential learning environment. During the “transition period”, this model specifically recognizes and honors the emotional needs and developmental stages of young children entering elementary school. It also allows for flexibility to accommodate students’ varied language abilities and experiences, while continuing to develop important skills in English. The target language, in this case Spanish, increases with each grade level focusing on proficiency in upper elementary, and fluency in Middle School.

Spanish Infusion accomplishes language acquisition in 4 stages:
  • Introductory – Grades JK and K
  • Interactive – Grades 1 and 2
  • Proficiency – Grades 3 through 5
  • Fluency – Grades 6 through 8

Designed according to the National Standards for Foreign Language Learning, Spanish Infusion is a program where students acquire language through a combination of the five C’s: Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons and Communities. Specifically, this includes art, literature, cultural studies, academics, music, drama, multimedia, and a variety of interactive activities with fluent and native Spanish speakers. By naturally weaving Spanish throughout the curriculum, the Infusion model fosters an appreciation for the language and a cultural awareness that gives students a platform for lifelong fluency, and success in a global community.

Goal: Spanish and English fluency in both academic and nonacademic language.
